Flame resistant fabrics are inherently designed to resist ignition and will self-extinguish when the flame source is removed, due to their chemical composition. Flame retardant fabrics, on the other hand, are treated with special chemicals to achieve similar self-extinguishing properties, but the base fabric itself is not inherently resistant to flames.
